Denim skirts in autumn: 5 looks with blouses, sweatshirts, and jackets

The denim skirt can continue to be a part of your outfits when autumn arrives. To change its character, think about the top, the footwear, and the relationship between lengths. A straight skirt with an embroidered blouse tells a different story than that same skirt with a sweatshirt and sneakers, even if you keep the handbag.

These five proposals start with a skirt from your own closet. You don't need it to be a specific length to apply these ideas: a midi version offers more denim surface; a short one gives more prominence to tights and boots. What is useful is to understand what each combination contributes and to adapt its proportions to how you like to dress.

Before choosing the blouse: observe the shape of your skirt

A straight skirt establishes a fairly defined line. You can pair it with wide sleeves to introduce volume up top or with a simple sweater to maintain the same direction. A flared skirt already provides movement below; if you add a wide blouse, decide whether you want to preserve that loose effect or highlight the waist by tucking in a portion of the front.

The length also changes the visual weight of the footwear. With a midi skirt, close-fitting ankle boots create a different finish than wide boots. With a short skirt, tall boots take up more space in the outfit. In both cases, prepare the complete combination: the same hem looks different with light-colored sneakers than with a dark boot.

Look 1: straight skirt, white blouse, and brown ankle boots

Start with a medium-blue straight-cut denim skirt. Add a special white blouse and brown ankle boots in a simple style. It is a suitable combination for lunch, a visit to an exhibition, or an afternoon of errands where you feel like wearing something more elaborate than a T-shirt.

The Azahar Blouse adds white cotton, a floral guipure yoke, vertical pintucks, and a mandarin collar with a ruffle. Denim presents a visually more casual base and lets those details stand out. A plain brown handbag can coordinate with the ankle boots; small earrings allow the neckline to have space.

If the skirt has a high waist, try tucking in only the front of the blouse and letting the rest hang loose. If you prefer to wear it loose, observe where it ends in relation to the skirt so that you see the proportion you are looking for. Our guide on a wide blouse tucked in or out develops these two options with more examples.

Look 2: dark denim and sweatshirt with silver detail

A dark, straight denim skirt can be combined with a black sweatshirt to form an almost continuous base. The interest appears in the differences between the surface of the denim and that of the sweatshirt. Add black, simple-lined sneakers and a small gray handbag so that the outfit maintains an urban read.

The Tuareg Sweatshirt has an oversized cut, dropped shoulders, and silver rhinestones and sequins on the yoke and sleeves. That detail allows the rest to be left fairly clean. Instead of adding a long necklace over the motif, you can choose discreet silver-toned earrings and reserve the spotlight for the garment.

The combination changes if you swap the sneakers for black ankle boots. You don't need to add a shiny skirt to wear it to an informal dinner: the rhinestones already introduce another finish. If the volume of the sweatshirt completely covers the waist, stick to a straight skirt so that the two garments don't compete with very expansive silhouettes.

Look 3: midi skirt and embroidered bomber jacket

Combine a blue midi skirt with a plain black T-shirt and a special bomber jacket. The T-shirt functions as a calm zone between the denim and the embroidery. For footwear, choose black ankle boots without large buckles; finish with an ecru or black handbag, depending on whether you prefer contrast or continuity.

The Lotus Flower Jacket mixes black velvet, hand-embroidered flowers in ecru, and rhinestones, with a gold zipper closure and ribbed finishes. Wearing it open shows the plain base and makes it easier to recognize the skirt's waist. Closed, the embroidery takes center stage in the outfit.

This look allows for a softer interpretation with an ecru T-shirt and dark flat shoes. Pick up the light tone of the embroidery in a single garment, without trying to make all the accessories match. This way you can repeat the skirt and the jacket for different plans by changing only the base and the footwear.

Look 4: short skirt, fine knit, and tall boots

If your denim skirt is short, you can build an outfit with a fine crew-neck sweater, tights, and tall boots. A palette of dark blue, gray, and black keeps the pieces related. Leave the boho detail to a small scarf or some earrings, rather than adding ornaments to every part of the outfit.

The sweater tucked in highlights the waistline; slightly loose, with the front barely tucked in, it produces a more relaxed effect. Choose the version that fits the actual thickness of the garment. If the fabric bunches up inside the skirt, it is better to leave it out or switch to a thinner layer.

Tights can approximate the color of the boots to create continuity, or introduce a deliberate contrast. A smooth finish makes the denim retain prominence. With wide-shaft boots, simplify the handbag and the sweater so that the outfit does not bring together several major volumes at once.

Look 5: flared skirt and embroidered black blouse

A flared denim skirt allows you to work with a different silhouette. Combine it with a black blouse with discreet embroidery from your closet, loafers, and a small shoulder bag. If the sleeves are also wide, showing a part of the waist helps to visually separate the two pieces.

In this proposal, loafers change the character of the outfit compared to ankle boots: they leave a lower finish and give more prominence to the movement of the skirt. You can add socks in the color of the shoe or choose tights, depending on your preference. You don't need the skirt to have a slit or a specific finish to carry out the idea.

If you are interested in other combinations with volume below, our guide on long skirts and embroidered blouses explains how to distribute lengths, sleeves, and accessories without turning every piece into an independent focal point.

Frequently asked questions about the denim skirt in autumn

Does the skirt have to be dark?

No. A light denim can also be combined with black, burgundy, or brown. The difference lies in the contrast: a light skirt separates the garments more, while a dark one integrates with greater continuity into a black base.

Can I wear a long skirt with sneakers?

Yes. Choose the length with the specific footwear in mind and avoid the hem dragging. A simple sneaker leaves space for a special blouse or sweatshirt; a very voluminous one becomes another protagonist piece of the outfit.
