How to choose a blouse neckline: V-neck, round, or mandarin collar

When choosing a blouse, the neckline determines much of what happens near the face: how much space is left open, where the embroidery begins, and how jewelry interacts with the garment. A V-neck, a round neck, and a mandarin collar produce different visuals, even when all three blouses have wide sleeves and a similar style.

You don't need to assign a mandatory shape to your body. It is more useful to observe what you feel like showing, what garments you are wearing, and where you want to place the detail. This guide compares three actual options from Martina Ibiza and proposes complete outfits to understand their differences without reducing the choice to rigid rules about silhouettes.

Neckline, collar, and opening: three related details

The neckline is the opening of the garment around the neck and chest. The collar can add a piece that rises or rests on that area, as happens in a mandarin design. The front opening, with buttons or drawstrings, also modifies how you can wear the blouse. That is why it is advisable to look at the three elements as a whole.

A buttoned round-neck blouse does not behave visually the same as a closed round-neck T-shirt. Not all mandarin collars have the same height or finishes either. To compare two garments, observe where the fabric ends next to the face, if there is embroidery around it, and what happens when you use the button placket allowed by its design.

V-neck: a vertical direction in the center

The V draws two lines that meet at the front and leaves an open area that you can keep clear. If the garment incorporates embroidered trim, that contour already acts as decoration. A necklace can accompany it, but it is not necessary to complete the outfit.

The Telma Blouse is black cotton, with ecru thread embroidery and a V-neck with a drawstring and tassels. It features three-quarter balloon sleeves and medallion-style embroidery. The drawstring adds another element to the center, so you can start with small earrings and then decide if you need anything else.

For a day-to-day outfit, pair it with dark blue straight-leg jeans, black ankle boots, and an ecru bag. For dinner, swap the denim for black dress trousers and choose a small matte-finish bag. In both cases, the blouse’s combination of black and ecru organizes the palette without requiring identical accessories.

If you want to incorporate a base layer, choose its neckline according to the effect you are looking for. A T-shirt that peeks out creates a new horizontal line; a base that cannot be seen keeps the V clean. There is no wrong option, but it is best that this second line is a conscious choice.

The embroidered trim and tassels on the Telma already provide detail around the V-neck.

Round neck with buttons: continuity and flexibility

A round neck draws a curve around the base of the neck. When it incorporates buttons on the front, it adds a central direction that allows the blouse's reading to vary according to its construction. It can work well with earrings as the only accessory near the face, especially if the yoke already concentrates significant detail.

The Carmen Blouse has a round neck with buttons, folk embroidery in ecru, a honeycomb yoke, and balloon sleeves. The garment's interest is distributed between the upper area and the sleeves, so a simple bottom allows that distribution to be better recognized.

Try pairing it with straight-leg grey trousers, black loafers, and a plain bag. If you choose a denim skirt, you can tuck in a small part of the front to show the waist. The goal is not to transform the shape of the neckline, but to relate a top with texture and volume to a base that has a clear line.

A short necklace can sit near the curve of the neck, but if it coincides with buttons or borders, it may get lost among the details. Before adding one, look at the outfit with earrings only. Often, leaving that space free allows the work of the blouse to be better appreciated.

Mandarin collar: a defined frame next to the face

The mandarin collar rises around the base of the neck instead of extending into lapels. Its presence depends on the height, the closure, and the finishes. A version with a ruffle introduces a softer, more decorative line; a plain one has a more refined reading. It is advisable to observe these details and not decide solely by the name.

The Azahar Blouse combines white cotton, a mandarin collar with a ruffle, a floral guipure yoke, and vertical tucks. The central button placket and the bead detail on the yoke complete an elaborate upper area. In this case, leaving the collar without a necklace allows the guipure and the finish to be distinguished.

One possible outfit brings together Azahar, brown straight-leg trousers, and ankle boots in the same tone. Another combines the blouse with a dark blue midi skirt and black flats. The white provides contrast in both proposals; the accessories can be simple, because the detail does not depend on an added print.

If you wear an inner base because of the openwork, decide what effect you want to obtain under the guipure. Our guide on what to wear under an openwork blouse explains how to relate the color, neckline, and length of that second garment.

How to combine each collar with a jacket

With a mandarin collar blouse, an open jacket with a simple neckline leaves the finish visible. If both garments have collars that rise, observe if you want to show both or if you prefer one to be tucked inside. The volume near the nape of the neck is as important for your comfort as the frontal aspect.

A V-neck can dialogue with the lapels of a blazer because both draw oblique lines, although they do not have to coincide exactly. A round neck offers contrast under those same lapels. Try the jacket with the specific blouse: two garments that work separately might overlap their details in the exact same place.

A comparison to decide according to your wardrobe

Option Main detail Initial accessory
V with drawstring Opening and central direction Small earrings
Round with buttons Neck curve and yoke Simple bag and clear neckline
Mandarin with ruffle Raised frame next to the face Discreet jewelry away from the yoke

If you are still in doubt, think about three bottom garments you already have and the jacket you use the most. The blouse that forms specific outfits with them may be more useful than an option you only like in isolation. Frequently asked questions when choosing a blouse

Do I have to choose the neckline according to my size?

There is no mandatory shape for each size. What matters is the actual fit, your preference regarding the opening, and the relationship with the inner and outer garments you are going to use.

Can I wear a necklace with any of these collars?

Yes, but they do not all need the same type of necklace. Look first at where the buttons, drawstrings, and embroidery are. If a piece of jewelry hides the detail you like about the blouse, try shifting that focus to the earrings.
