Fall airport outfit: embroidered sweatshirt and other comfortable combinations

An autumn airplane travel look needs to accompany you through various moments: leaving home, moving through the airport, sitting during the journey, and arriving at your destination. If you can't change afterwards, it should also fit in with the first walk or meal you have planned. Dressing comfortably does not mean giving up a garment you especially like.

An embroidered or beaded sweatshirt can add personality to a very simple base. To get it right, it's worth distinguishing what it contributes visually from what you need for traveling: a waistband that feels comfortable when sitting, familiar footwear, and layers you can manage. The following proposals are based on basic items from your wardrobe and two different sweatshirts from Martina Ibiza.

Build the base you'll be sitting in first

Before thinking about the full outfit, choose your trousers. A straight knit style can work if you prefer a flexible waistband; jeans you’ve already traveled in, if you feel comfortable with that fit; relaxed dress trousers, if you want to arrive looking more polished. The label of a category does not replace your experience with the specific garment.

Combine the trousers with a plain t-shirt that you can wear on its own. This way, the sweatshirt is not a piece your entire look depends on during the trip. A cream t-shirt with black trousers produces a clear contrast; a grey t-shirt with dark grey trousers creates continuity and allows the embroidery to take center stage when you add the top layer.

Also choose your socks and footwear before closing your suitcase. Long trousers that look good with ankle boots might drag with your travel sneakers. Adjusting that relationship avoids improvising a huge hem roll-up or wearing a different pair than the one you had actually chosen for walking.

Look 1: embroidered black sweatshirt and straight trousers

The first proposal combines straight black trousers, a cream t-shirt, an embroidered black sweatshirt, and light-colored sneakers. Keeping a dark base makes it easy to repeat the trousers upon arrival; the light detail on the top relates to the t-shirt and the footwear. You don't need to add another print for the outfit to have character.

The Nómada Sweatshirt has an oversized cotton cut, a hood, and white embroidery with sun and Greek key motifs on the shoulders and sleeves. It features a kangaroo pocket and drawstring with tassels. In this combination, these elements add personality to a base that is otherwise quite simple.

The volume of the hood deserves a separate decision: you might like how it looks in the ensemble, but if you prefer to lean back with a clear neck, a crewneck sweatshirt will be another option. There is no universal choice. Think about how you sit and the layers you usually wear, instead of choosing just based on the front photograph.

Look 2: cream sweatshirt and grey trousers to arrive and keep going

For a trip that ends with a meal or a visit, try straight grey trousers, a white t-shirt, and a special cream sweatshirt. Add plain sneakers or loafers you know well and a dark bag. The light palette on top changes the character of the outfit without relying on a rigid shirt or multiple accessories.

The Duna Sweatshirt combines cream cotton, an oversized cut, dropped shoulders, and rhinestones and beads in a geometric motif. Its crewneck offers an alternative to the hood. Since the detail is on the garment itself, you can leave the neck area free and limit jewelry to small earrings.

For the rest of the day, those same trousers can accompany a simple blouse you have in your suitcase. Repeating the base reduces the number of completely independent outfits you need to prepare. In our guide on clothing for an autumn city break, you will find a way to organize combinations for several days.

Look 3: familiar jeans and an easy-to-repeat layer

If you regularly travel in jeans and find them comfortable when sitting, there is no need to replace them with sportswear. Choose a straight cut that you can later combine with other shoes, add a plain t-shirt, and a sweatshirt that dialogues with the color of the denim. Mid-blue and cream offer a soft contrast; dark blue and black form a more discreet base.

The bag can introduce a third tone: brown, grey, or burgundy, depending on what you have in the rest of your luggage. Avoid choosing it just for the plane if it won't combine with any other proposal later. A piece you can use during your stay has more mileage than an accessory intended for a single airport photo.

The outer layer depends on the expected weather at the origin and destination. A jacket you already wear with that sweatshirt allows you to check in advance the space available in the sleeves and shoulders. If you add a coat, a simple base underneath keeps the outfit recognizable when you change between indoors and outdoors.

Organize layers without turning them into additional luggage

Each layer should have a place when you aren't wearing it. Think about where you will store your sweatshirt or jacket and leave that space before closing the bag. If you have to hold all the garments in your hand along with your phone and documents, the layering system stops being practical.

You don't need to accumulate t-shirts, a sweater, a sweatshirt, and a jacket out of habit. Choose a combination in accordance with the journey and the expected weather. To develop this idea from a style perspective, our guide on how to dress boho in layers explains how to relate volumes and lengths in autumn outfits.

When a garment has embroidery or beads, avoid compressing it carelessly next to zippers and loose objects. You can reserve an area of the bag for it where it won't constantly rub against rough pieces. The way you store it should respect its label and finishes, not a rule that is identical for all sweatshirts.

A short list to prepare your travel outfit

  • Choose the trousers you really feel like spending several hours sitting in.
  • Check the length with the footwear you will use that day.
  • Leave a t-shirt you also like visible under the sweatshirt.
  • Decide where each layer will go when you take it off.
  • Repeat at least one piece in another outfit during your stay.
  • Prepare accessories around what you need to carry.

This order avoids starting with the accessories and finding out at the end that no combination works for the entire journey. It also makes it easier to have the outfit ready the night before without taking out half the suitcase to change a garment at the last minute.

Frequently asked questions about the airplane look

Hoodie or crewneck sweatshirt?

It depends on your preference and the layers you are going to pile on. The hood has more visual presence on the back; the crewneck leaves that area clear. Choose while also thinking about the outer garment.

Does a comfortable look have to be sporty?

No. Familiar straight trousers, a simple t-shirt, and a special sweatshirt can form a polished proposal. Comfort is determined by the fit that works for you, not by all pieces belonging to the same category.
