How to wear a spaghetti strap dress when it gets chilly
A spaghetti-strap dress can still be part of your plans when it gets chilly, but your outer layer needs to match the actual weather. To adapt it, distinguish between what you'll wear during your commute and what you need inside the venue. That distinction prevents you from choosing based solely on how it looks in a photo.
Prepare the dress for indoors first
Adjust the straps with the footwear and undergarments you plan to wear. Check the height of the neckline, the armholes, and the back. The Talaya Dress features adjustable straps and a shirred elastic back: these details allow you to adjust certain areas, but they don't replace checking the garment's measurements.
If you want to wear a thin layer underneath, try it on before calling it a day. It can change how the wrap neckline sits, add bulk to the armholes, or peek out from the back. You need to like it as a visible part of the outfit, not just as a quick fix.
A jacket for a short transition
A jacket can accompany you to dinner if conditions allow. Check that its closures and embellishments don't snag on the straps or embroidery. Put it on and take it off several times while wearing the dress: this way, you'll detect if it pulls on the neckline or misadjusts the straps.
With a cropped jacket, look at where it ends in relation to your waist. With a longer one, check how it falls over the volume of the skirt. Our guide on jackets for long dresses expands on these proportions.
A coat for spending time outside
If your plans include waiting outside or walking, choose a coat based on the forecast and your cold tolerance. The length and thickness you need cannot be deduced just by the fact that it is autumn. Check that you can close it over the dress without compressing your waist.
Think about where you will leave that garment upon arrival. A coat that will go to a cloakroom doesn't need to become the centerpiece of your interior look; one you will wear for much of the evening will have more presence in the overall ensemble.
The shawl: a piece with a specific function
A shawl can cover your shoulders or complement the colors of your look, but it doesn't always provide enough warmth. Test sitting down and standing up while wearing it. If you have to constantly readjust it, you might prefer a garment with sleeves for that plan.
Avoid pinning it in a way that pulls on a thin strap or embroidery. Before using a brooch, check that it doesn't damage the area where you place it.
Don't forget the bottom half
Try the outfit with the closed-toe shoe, boot, or sandal you have chosen. The height can change the functional length of the skirt. If you are wearing tights, also observe if they affect the drape of the garment.
