What to wear for a family Christmas lunch

A Christmas lunch often lasts a while, between the appetizer, the meal, the post-meal conversation, and sometimes a walk. When choosing what to wear, think about those hours as a whole. An embroidered blouse with trousers or a dress with simple accessories can provide the festive touch you're looking for without relying on a full evening look.

At home: a simple base and a special detail

Start by choosing the garment you know you feel comfortable in. It could be a pair of dark straight-leg trousers you already own and a textured blouse. The Carmen Blouse, with its embroidery, balloon sleeves, and loose fit, allows you to focus the spotlight on the upper half.

Test how it falls over your trousers and what happens when you sit down. If you prefer to tuck it in, distribute the fabric evenly without bunching it up in one spot. If you wear it untucked, check that the hemline hits at a length you like, even from the side.

If you're hosting the family

Before deciding on wide sleeves, simulate the movements you'll be making: reaching for a plate, picking up a glass, or leaning over the table. It’s not about giving up on a special garment, but rather knowing its limits and choosing with comfort in mind. You can finish getting dressed after the messiest preparations are done.

Earrings and necklaces also deserve a quick test. If a long pendant falls onto the table every time you lean forward, you might prefer earrings or a shorter piece. Wearing fewer accessories can make the blouse's detailing stand out more.

Restaurant and walk: the outfit needs an outer layer

If the meal is out, the journey and the expected temperature matter as much as the interior. Try on your coat or jacket over your chosen outfit, especially if there are voluminous sleeves. Check that you can bend your arms and that the closure doesn't compress the embroidery.

A dress can also work for a daytime lunch. The key is in how you style it: footwear you're used to, a practical bag, and jewelry appropriate for the setting. You can explore our dresses for celebrations and evaluate each style by its cut, coverage, and measurements, beyond the name of the collection.

A light palette or a deep color

Ecru and black offer contrast; dark blue and sand tones create another combination that's easy to try. You don't need to add red for the outfit to feel appropriate for Christmas. If you choose an embroidered garment, use one of its colors as a reference for the rest.

The post-meal test

Sit down for a few minutes with the full outfit on. Check the waistband, buttons, and neckline; stand up and see if you need to readjust anything. It’s a simple way to detect what might bother you during a long meal.
