How to measure the length of a dress before buying it online
To know how a dress bought online will fit, you need to know its length and from which point it was measured. A single figure is not enough: measuring from the shoulder is not the same as doing so from the neckline. The most useful comparison usually starts with a dress of your own with a similar cut.
Ask where the measurement is taken from
Check the product description to see if the length is measured from the shoulder, from the base of a strap, or from another point. If it is not indicated, ask before comparing. It is also good to know if the hem is straight, has ruffles, or features parts of different lengths.
In garments with adjustable straps, the length you see when worn can vary depending on the adjustment. Do not try to compensate for a dress that is too long by shortening the straps without checking the neckline, bust, and armholes: those areas will change simultaneously.
Prepare a reference garment
- Choose a dress that fits you at the length you are looking for and has a similar structure.
- Lay it out on a flat surface, without stretching the fabric.
- Place the tape measure at the same starting point used in the product description of the model you want to buy.
- Measure to the hem and also note any difference between the front and the back.
A tight knit dress and one with a full skirt will not necessarily drape the same way even if they share a measurement. Use the reference to guide you, not as a guarantee of an identical result.
Check the height with the intended footwear
Put on the reference garment and the shoes you plan to wear. See where the hem falls when walking and stepping up. If you alternate between heels and flats, check both: a small difference can make a long skirt start to graze the ground.
For a model with an intricate skirt, such as the Talamanca Dress, also check how the motifs and finishes are distributed. If you anticipate an alteration, consult with a professional before buying, because modifying the hem can affect the design or the finish.
Do not mix body and garment measurements
Your total height is not equivalent to the length of dress you need. Your shoulder position, torso, waist cut, and how the garment drapes over the body also influence it. That is why two people of the same height can wear a model differently.
Check the bust, waist, and hips in addition to the length. An area that is too tight can cause the dress to ride up or lose its intended drape. Our guide on how to check a dress's measurements explains how to prepare that comparison.
What information to send if you need help
Indicate the model you are interested in, the measurement of your reference garment, and where you took it from. Add the type of footwear and the height you want the hem to reach. This information is more useful than just asking if it "fits long."
